Are you surprised to hear me say I love you?
Do those words shock you?
I'm sure they don't
I think I've lost the ability to awe you
I keep trying
Nose to the grindstone and all that
The hardest job I've ever had
You surprised me
I never expected your departure
Your return was delayed
Blame the snow
It could have been the ice that kept you away
Either way I was surprised when I felt your warmth again
Snow days are great for studying anatomy
But I've lost my road map to your heart
I left it in California
Or maybe Florida
Or maybe Indiana
That's where it is
I used it to start a fire in the corn field
Surprised that you saw my smoke signals
You put out a welcome mat
Covered it with wisdom
Three licks to get to the center of your lollipop
But only in Tennessee can I hear you anymore
Sometimes in Missouri
But only if I take that one road through country that is green
Surprise me and tell me that you love me
I drove day and night to cross that one state
Just to hear you whisper in a kiss
But you shouted so loud
Words of hate and anger so heavy
I felt the weight of them when I tried to make it over that bridge
It didn't surprise me to feel them though
I've grown use to their touch on my eardrums
I'll take a bus to Florida
Give you your space
Walk like the dead to face my truth and consequences
Get lost in the land of enchantment
Try and surprise you with acts of kindness
I'm always trying
I would be surprised if you noticed
That's the only surprise left
