Honesty

Honesty

By
Nathan Caleb Camerer

Honesty is not always the best policy
Sometimes, something you say or do in the spirit of honesty
Turns into a hand grenade
And blows up in your face
That confession of love or caring
Can become a cancer
And a day
Or a week
Or a month
Maybe a year down the road
Causes something to be twisted around
Assumption
Speculation
The wrong idea
Because of the context
You find yourself out in the cold
Broke and bloody and gasping for air
Is lying and cheating and deception
A better choice
The same result can be found
If that’s the course you choose
The pain can be the same
But I think it’s less
Maybe just a little
When you’re honest with yourself
With your friends
With your family
Honesty is not always the best policy
But it’s the one I choose

Creature of Habit

Creature of Habit

Sitting at a bar
Lonely but not alone
Alone but not lonely
Depends on what you look like
And how many I’ve had
How long have I been thinking about you
About me
About us
About her
About life, liberty and the pursuit of all that other shit
It seems like forever
It’s getting repetitive
But I’m a creature of habit
I can’t help it
I’ve tried
Shut down and go numb
Out of sight
Out of mind
Haunted and heartbroken
Thinking about “what if’s”
And knowing “why”
Half-ass attempts to find another
But the options are few and far between
Leaves me with nothing to put in your place
The hole in my life
I can’t drink enough to fill it
But God knows I try
And I just keep writing about you
The good and the bad
Everything was accepted
Now I’m sitting at a bar
Alone but not lonely
Lonely but not alone
Depends on what you look like
And how many I’ve had

You Don't Know Me Better Than That

You Don’t Know Me Better Than That

I’m that guy
The nice guy who finishes last
I’m the guy
Who takes you back
After you’ve had your affair
I’m the guy
Who holds your hand in the ER
I’m the guy
Who offers to hold your hand in the clinic
When your affair comes back to haunt you
I’m the guy
Who doesn’t hold it against you
If you break my heart
I’m the guy
Who can walk a mile in your shoes
And understand why you ended it
I’m that guy
Who meets the new me
And politely shakes his hand
With a genuine smile on my face
I wear my heart on my sleeve
And I don’t play games
I’m not what others have painted me to be
So they can justify why they’ve treated me the way they have treated me
I’m that guy
The nice guy who finishes last
