Zugzwang

Zugzwang

By
Nathan Caleb Camerer

You are like a flower
You’re the rose
Complete with petals and thorns
Makes me hesitant to grab you,
But you grabbed me first
At home in you
Like a shark in the sea,
But even a shark can drown in the sea
Hold me still and see what happens
You’re such a beautiful thing
I should have known you’d break my heart
My life has become a dress rehearsal,
But for a show that’ll never open
No bright lights and flashbulbs
Running out of moves to make
Zugzwang
It doesn’t matter
Not unhappy,
But sad
It’s become my nature
Sad can be beautiful,
But not sadness
The past is gone
The future is not here
Living in the present
With the scars of your thorns in my hands
Salt in my lungs
Passion is a funny thing
Zugzwang
My life got more complicated when you came into it
Life as I knew it is over
Never to return
Trying to learn to walk and talk again
I just want you in my life
It makes it more delightful
I don’t know what you want me to be
There are places I’ll never go again
Without you it’s not as much fun
Zugzwang
A complete accident
A freak occurrence
Enjoy my heart
The one you stole from me

Leaving me these salt filled scars
