Hopeless Romantic

Hopeless Romantic

By
Nathan Caleb Camerer

In love with love

That’s me I suppose

That’s how the song goes anyway

The Hopeless Romantic

Who never gave up on love

And believed in love at first sight

Who believed in connections

And soulmates

And all that other jazz

That just makes you blue

When it wasn’t love at first sight

But lust at first sight

When the connections weren’t really there

Lust at first sight

Is how it all starts anyway

Love starts with lust

Love starts with desire

That first look from across the room

The eyes are pleased

Then the cheeseball cliché ice breaker

How do you know so and so?

Do you come here often?

I like your tattoo

Then the conversation is off and running

Sometimes at a pace you can hardly keep up with

You find yourself compromising beliefs and likes and dislikes

All in the hope it doesn’t end

This first taste

The “Real You”

Slowly starts oozing to the surface

Maybe later that first night

In the front seat of a car

In a dark corner at so and so’s house

The “Real You”

All the things you hide

The fear and loathing that they won’t understand

Then comes love

The day when they catch you color coordinating your t-shirts

And just laugh

And offer to help

The day they break down

In a public place for no real reason

And you threaten to use a spoon

To eat the guys heart

Who is sitting in the booth next to you

And won’t stop staring

Is it hopeless to believe

That lust and desire

Can remain

But also become love

I think it’s hopeful

Not hopeless

I’m a hopeful romantic
